Jobing Description
Summary:

Plans, assigns edits and generally coordinates the editorial content of Nevada Public Radio’s Desert Companion from concept through to print completion. Reports to the Director of Programming.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Establishes an editorial board structure that incorporates the Programming Department of NVPR, selected members of the community advisory board and other relevant individuals.
2. Creates and coordinates an annual editorial calendar to meet the goal of becoming “The” city/regional magazine for the Las Vegas metropolitan area, reflecting the organization’s values and editorial rigor of public radio journalism.
3. Develops ideas for content to meet the mission and goals of the publication
4. Assigns work and oversees schedules for the editorial/graphic content of publication according to the print and distribution deadlines agreed with the Development Department of Nevada Public Radio
5. Maintains standard agreements with external contractors and makes budget recommendations for achieving the goals of the publication in future cycles, guides freelancer policy decisions on items such as kill fees, licensing, exclusivity etc.
6. Writes or directs the writing of articles, stories, editorials, headlines, and captions
7. Copy edits or directs copy editing activities such as conferring with writers, editing copy, marking up copy, and reading page proofs, or blue lines.
8. Participates in marketing and promotion planning for NVPR’s Desert Companion with Community Relations and Sales Departments to maximize publication exposure in print, online and on air.
9. Works proactively with broadcast content producers/program director to maximize efficiencies of re-versioning broadcast content into print, reverse publishing DC content into KNPR’s State of Nevada and to generally converge the entire output so that NVPR platforms drive the media narratives in key areas to include culture, sustainability and fostering civic involvement.
10. Participate in fundraising activities as needed.

Skills / Requirements
Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

1. Thorough, nuanced and critical understanding of Southern Nevada, the economy,
environment, institutions, politics, people and culture.
2. Excellent grammar communication and writing skills.
3. Must be able to conduct phone and in-person interviews.
4. Strong creative skills to generate ideas, concepts and innovative execution.
5. Understanding of the general principles and values of non commercial public broadcasting.
6. Knowledge of AP style.
7. Ability to effectively manage and coach art director and freelance writers.
8. Willingness to work in an emerging “converged” media environment.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
The Editor of Desert Companion will manage the work of the Art Director in relation to the production of Desert Companion.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Valid NV Driver's License and proof of insurance

Education and/or Experience:
Master's degree (M. A.) or equivalent; or four to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
